Military bases are fortified bunkers and any move is fraught with life-or-death risk: Five years after the war here began, Chechnya remains as much a killing field as ever. Russian military forces, which include 70,000 troops from the defense and interior ministries as well as the FSB security service, based in Chechnya, have lost 5,300 men since the war began in October 1999, according to official figures. Russian non-governmental organizations say the actual number of soldiers killed in Chechnya in the past five years is probably closer to double that number. AFP PHOTO / ALEXANDER NEMENOV
